The spotlight, it makes everything be- come the only spot, become the center of the center. It makes things shine up, and cannot ignore. There is always a spotlight not yet taken somewhere. And it let you would see the shadow in the dark.

The aim of the project, “the manhole in the spotlight” is to change the behavior while people are walking through this road. This path is a short- cut to walk from location A to B. As the road is too narrow, it is allowing only two people to walk nearby at the same time. At night, the way turns dark, and people always step on the uneven maintenance hole cover, which makes disturbing noise. The project is to make the manhole cover becomes visible and make the people aware of it.

The idea is to make a spotlight effect shining the “cover” up. However, to create it a little different from the normal’s spotlight, the physic of light used in this project. The spotlight itself made by two parts; first is the flashlight; second is a magnifier. By changing the direction of scattering light to a focused beam, the magnifier creates a fabulous result. And thorough calculation, the light focuses on a point and nearly passes through the magnifier in almost parallel, then spread as cone become a spotlight shining the manhole cover-up.

Moreover, the electric torch is over 1000 lumen and increasing the tem- perature inside the installation, which is another technical problem that may cause accidents to occur. For example, fire and drop off. Dry ice also used in this project. It is to decrease the temperature inside the art- work and to create a smoke effect to make the light viewable.

Last but not least, mirrors’ box reflecting light from the surrounding, make it become the only thing that is shiny on the street, and blocking the light inside to spread around.
